Converting text and documents
Text conversions are most reliable when you know which structure the target format can represent. Review headings, links, tables, and special characters after export.
Vignar’s document tools handle Markdown to HTML, HTML to Markdown, HTML to plain text, Markdown to plain text, plain text to HTML, and CSV to a Markdown table. Text files can also be loaded into the editor. The converters focus on text content and lightweight markup; they are not a replacement for a word processor and do not preserve the full layout of a complex office document.
Choose a conversion path
Markdown → HTML
Use this when publishing formatted text on a website. Review the generated markup, especially embedded HTML and links, before putting it on a public page.
HTML → Markdown
Useful for moving readable articles into a Markdown editor. Complex styling, forms, scripts, and layout-specific details do not have direct Markdown equivalents.
HTML → plain text
Removes markup for a simple text copy. Check that line breaks and list boundaries still make sense in the destination.
CSV → Markdown table
Turns the first CSV row into a table header and subsequent rows into table rows. Cells containing pipes are escaped so they do not become extra columns.
How to get a clean result
- Start with a text file encoded in a format your browser can read, or paste the text into the editor.
- Select the source and destination conversion shown in the tool.
- Convert and inspect the output before copying or downloading it. Pay attention to punctuation, blank lines, links, and table alignment.
- Open the result in the target editor or browser. Different Markdown renderers and HTML viewers support different features.
CSV and tables
CSV is a plain-text table format, but delimiters and quoting can differ between exports. Use a comma-delimited file for CSV input. If a cell contains a comma, it should be quoted according to CSV conventions; embedded quotes should be escaped. If your data uses tabs, use the data converter’s TSV option instead. Check row count and column alignment after conversion—especially with empty cells and line breaks inside quoted values.
HTML safety and fidelity
Conversion changes representation; it does not validate that imported HTML is safe to publish. Review and sanitize markup according to your publishing environment before embedding it in a site. Plain text conversion also discards formatting, while HTML-to-Markdown may simplify complex layouts. Keep the source document so you can compare or retry with another tool.
Common questions
Will this convert DOCX or PDF layouts?
No. The document converter is for text-oriented formats and lightweight markup. Use a dedicated office or PDF editor when page layout, tracked changes, or embedded objects must be preserved.
Why did my table shift?
Check the delimiter and quoting in the source. A stray separator inside an unquoted field is interpreted as another column. Markdown tables also display differently depending on the renderer.
