Audio and video conversion basics

In-browser media conversion depends on the codecs built into your browser and operating system. Choose the output format your destination supports, then verify the downloaded file.

Vignar’s media converter uses browser media capabilities for audio and video. Audio output options include WAV, WebM audio, and OGG; video output offers WebM and MP4 when the browser can record that format. The tool can trim a start and end range, change playback speed, and normalize audio volume. Supported containers and codecs vary from browser to browser.

Container versus codec

A media file has a container and encoded streams inside it. MP4 and WebM describe containers, while codecs describe how audio or video is compressed. Two files with the same extension can use different codecs; a device may play one but not the other. Vignar asks the browser to record a supported type and reports or uses a compatible output when the requested type is not available. Check the resulting extension and playback in your destination app.

Audio output choices

WAV

Useful when broad editing compatibility or uncompressed PCM audio matters. Files can be substantially larger than compressed alternatives.

WebM audio and OGG

Compressed browser-friendly options. Playback support depends on the app and platform, and the resulting codec can vary with browser support.

Video output choices

WebM is commonly supported in modern browsers. MP4 recording is available only when the browser reports support; the presence of an MP4 option does not guarantee every MP4 codec will be available. If output playback fails, try WebM or convert in a media editor that lets you choose a specific codec.

Trimming and speed

Enter a start time and, if needed, an end time in seconds. Use a short test clip first and play the result from beginning to end. Changing playback speed affects clip duration and can affect audio pitch or synchronization depending on the browser. Keep the original when timing or synchronization is important.

Why might conversion fail?

Try a shorter clip, another current desktop browser, or a dedicated encoder that exposes codec settings. Do not assume a successful download means the output is suitable for broadcast, archival, or professional delivery; inspect it first.
